PENSIONERS were targeted by thieves yesterday (July 18) who snatched their purses, police say.

Two 82-year-old women were victims of the separate purse dippings in Kendal and Bowness.

A woman from Barrow was walking in the area of Kendal Bus Station, on Blackhall Road, near Costa Coffee at around 12.30pm when her purse was swiped.

Inside the purse taken from her open handbag which she was carrying over her shoulder was a bank card which was then used.

Police said the second attack in Bowness happened at around 2pm in the Lakeland shop, on Lake Road.

A group including one man and about four women was said to have approached the woman from the Isle of Man.

One woman asked what size the shoe was that the victim was holding and Cumbria Police said she thinks another woman toughed her bag at the same time.

Shortly after the elderly woman realised her purse had been stolen but she was able to cancel all three bank cards.

Cumbria Police said the group was described as being of Eastern European appearance and in their 20s.

Anyone with information is asked to call PC 2113 Kerr at Kendal Police Station on non-emergency 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
