AN OPPORTUNIST thief who took £50 from the tray of a self-service checkout has been ordered to pay back the cash to its rightful owner.

Paul Furey, of Peat Lane, Kendal, pleaded guilty to theft when he appeared at South Lakeland Magistrates’ Court.

Lisa Hine, prosecuting, said 23-year-old Furey took the cash from the till at Asda, on Burton Road, Kendal, after it was left by shopper Rebecca Hewitson, who drew the money out as cashback, but left it behind CCTV showed Furey take the money, said Ms Hine.

She said he told police most people would do the same if they found themselves in that situation, said Ms Hine.

Furey, representing himself, told the court: “I was in the wrong, I shouldn’t have done it. I sat outside and wanted to take it back.”

Furey was fined £135, has to pay £50 back to Ms Hewitson, £85 court costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
