A MONKEY has been spotted in a resident's back garden in Dalton.

Julie Pickthall got a shock when she saw a capuchin monkey sat on her fence while she was out in her garden.

Apparently the mischievous monkey then lept onto her neighbour's fence and began treating itself to nuts and water from the bird feeder.

It then disappeared into a nearby field.

The South Lakes Safari Zoo, Dalton, where the monkey is believed to have escaped from, declined to comment to the Gazette about the incident.

Capuchins are very small monkeys, about the size of a cat, and do not pose a threat to humans.

They are not known to bite or be aggressive in any way.
