Villagers and visitors turned out in force to support the Beetham Sports and soak up the atmosphere as the sun beat down on the show field.

Treasurer Cheryl Greenwood said that the gate receipts were up on last year. Children took part in sprint, sack and obstacle races and a cross country race. There were also track races for the adults.

One of the main events is the five-mile fell race, which this year attracted a field of 91 runners and was won by Helm Hill’s Mark Addison who was just 11 seconds outside the course record. He finished in a time of 35.28 Mark’s sister, Penny Addison, who was competing in her first fell race since the age of 12, won the ladies’ race and finished a very respectable 23rd in a time of 45.52.

And there was plenty of interest in the Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling which saw Thomas Brocklebank win the all weights class and Graham Brocklebank take the 13-stone class. The winner of the ladies’ competition was Tracy Hodgson.

The other winners were: Class 12yrs - Ted Baker; Class 14yrs - Ted Hodgson; Class 16yrs, Ted Hodgson; Class 18yrs, James Hayhurst.
