YOUNG people are being given the chance to take part in a range of sports activities in the South Lakes during the school holidays.

The Summer of Sport sessions are being run by North Country Leisure, South Lakeland District Council’s sports and leisure service provider.

Aimed at five to 19-year-olds the multi-sport sessions are taking place in locations across the district in places including Kendal, Ambleside, Grange-over-Sands, Broughton, Grasmere, Allithwaite and Coniston.

The sessions will be held at Ambleside Rugby Club, Coniston Primary School, Broughton Victory Hall, Grange-over-Sands’ Yew Tree Playing Fields and Allithwaite’s King George V playing field. The venue for Grasmere is to be confirmed.

They will also be held at Multi Use Games Areas (MUGAs) in the Honeypot Estate, Ulverston, Hallgarth Estate, Kendal and Sandylands Estate, Kendal.

Young people will be given the chance to sample a variety of activities including rounders, football, tag rugby, cricket, netball and tennis.

Coun Chris Hogg, portfolio holder for Culture, Arts and Events, took part in one of the sessions in Sandylands last week.

“It was really great to see children from Sandylands enjoying organised sport and getting plenty of exercise running around outdoors,” he said. It's reassuring for parents to know there are safe activities for their children to enjoy in the summer holidays. It's been a while since I played cricket but I really enjoyed it and there were plenty of other sports to choose from too.”

The sessions are being put on in partnership with the Cumbrian Sport and Physical Activity Alliance Foundation.
