POLICE are appealing for information about the collision which closed the A65 on Friday, which they hve now confirmed was 'fatal'.

North Yorkshire Police officers say a motorist from Derby died at the scene, when his vehicle was involved in a crash with an HGV, driven by a 31-year-old Kendal woman.

The incident occurred at around 2.50pm on the busy A65, close to Austwick and Clapham.

Officers say a blue Renault Clio was travelling south along the road, from Ingleton to Settle, while the articulated lorry - a blue curtain-sider with white tractor unit - was heading in the opposite direction.

The 40-year-old man driving the Clio died at the scene.

Police say they 'are not in a position to release his identity at this time'.

The lorry driver did not require hospital treatment.

Diversions remained in place until 9.30pm on Friday to allow for the police examination of the crash scene and for the vehicles to be recovered.

Now investigating officers are appealing for anyone who saw either vehicle prior to, or at the time of the collision, to contact them as soon as possible.

Anyone with information should either email peter.stringer@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk, or contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, selecting option 2 and asking for Pete Stringer or the Road Policing Group at Skipton.
