HUNDREDS of people across Westmorland gathered in churches, parks and at war memorials yesterday to remember those who perished in the First World War.
Lights were turned off at landmark buildings such as Kendal Town Hall and Ulverston’s Hoad monument to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War.
In Kendal some 150 people gathered in a circle around the town’s war memorial for a poignant and moving ceremony that saw two buglers playing The Last Post and Kendal Mayor Coun Tom Clare lay a wreath. People brought along their own candles to set down on the steps of the memorial.

The Lights Out campaign saw people and organisations across the UK switching off lights from 10pm to 11pm. Many people in South Lakeland observed this period of reflection and candles could be seen outside homes with dimmed lights throughout the area.
