PARENTS are being encouraged to bring their kids to Windermere this month for free outdoor swimming lessons.

Running from August 18-24, Swim Safe teaches children aged from 7-14 safety and survival skills for swimming in open water - perfect skills to learn while holidaying in the Lakes.

Swim Safe is the result of a partnership between The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) and the National Trust.

Taking place at the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park and Low Wray Campsite, sessions comprise a 10-minute open-water safety lesson provided by RLSS UK lifeguards and up to 30 minutes of in-water tuition with ASA swimming teachers.

The purpose of Swim Safe is to teach children the difference between swimming in a pool and swimming in an outdoors environment.

Jon Glenn, Head of Learn to Swim at the ASA said: “Although many children learn to swim the basic 25 metres set out in the national curriculum in their local pool, open water situations have their own set of dangers and challenges which cannot necessarily be recreated during indoor lessons.

“While pool swimming is important to help improve safety for our children in general, we often forget that many children swim most often while they are on holiday.”
