CATTLE numbers plunged to an all-time low at a South Lakeland agricultural show because of bovine TB fears.

There were just four animals on show at the Lunesdale Show, in Underley Park, Kirkby Lonsdale, which was in stark contrast to 280 a century ago.

Show chairman David Barton said: “TB has been an issue during the past two or three years, coming to the fore in the last 12 months.

"TB has got into the area not because of wildlife but it's being spread by animal movement so farmers are trying to be proactive."

He added that those bringing cattle to the show would require pre-movement testing checks which are costly and time consuming.

Show secretary Gill Gibbons said they would usually expect around 40 cattle entries so it was 'sad' to see such a dramatic drop in numbers.

But the show had a bumper entry of 539 sheep and numbers were ‘good’ in classes elsewhere, and more than 5,000 people attended.

Mrs Gibbons added: "I think it's been a successful show and it's business as usual for the future."

Securing supreme champion in the sheep classes was Jayne Knowles with her two sheer rough fell Tup.

“I’m over the moon, to win supreme on the field is absolutely awesome,” said the High Borrow Bridge farmer, of Selside.

“He’s three-years-old and we’ve only had him since October but he has tremendous limbs.”

Allan Blair, of Thornton, also wowed judges with his champion winning group of three Suffolk sheep.

“I’m retired but I just keep these to cut the grass, and they’re just a great team!” he said.

And despite dwindling cattle entries, Tom and Tina Altham, of Whittington, brought four of their Lunsedale herd for people to see. The pair became champion owners for the second year running when their three-year-old Limousin bull Procters Hummer scooped first place.

Stockman Alastair Beaton said: “He’s well-muscled, has good legs, is long enough and has good locomotion."

And the poultry champion was Kendal resident Jim Benson's black pecan which plucked the top spot for the second year running.
