SEDBERGH School recorded the best haul of A and A* grades in its history – in the first year after the merger with Casterton.

Eighty-nine A and A*s were awarded to 102 A Level candidates, and 98.3 per cent of all exams taken were passed.

Deputy headmaster Dan Harrison said: "I am delighted with these results and pleased that the many initiatives we have introduced in recent years are coming to fruition."

Among those smiling on results morning were Robbie Stevenson, from Austwick, who was recently picked for the Wales RFU senior Sevens squad and achieved two A*s and one A. He is now Durham-bound to study Classics.

Jonny Mells, from near Kirkby Stephen, also won two A*s and an A and is to study Earth Sciences at the Univer-sity of St Andrews.
