A NEW ‘family theme’ helped pull in the crowds to Appleby Agricultural Society’s annual show on Saturday.

The event, at Appleby Golf Course, attracted around 20 per cent more people this year thanks to attractions for children such as a ‘creation station’, where youngsters could play with clay and design animal masks.

Also new this year was a dog agility display, while Kirkby Stephen Silver Band provided music.

Show secretary Kath Martin said: “The family theme was very successful and we were absolutely delighted with how the day went. We did more advertising this year and were pleased to get a lot more people coming from further afield.”

Organisers also enlarged the equestrian area where champions included 14-year-old Nikkita Guy on her pony Silver Star Lad, from Bedlands Gate, Penrith, were victorious in the riding pony category.

Nikkita’s mother Lynne said: “He’s the pony of a lifetime - he’s got good manners, he’s level-headed, and Nikkita does everything with him.”

Nicole Fry and pony Treacle were named reserve champion in the unregistered mountain and moorland category in only their second show.

There was also a special win for Elizabeth Butterworth, who was making her first appearance at a show for five months after recovering from an injury.

Elizabeth, on Bay Connemara Cross Forrest Gump, won sports horse champion and picked up the ‘Tommy’ trophy for senior showing and dressage champion.

She donated the trophy herself six years ago in memory of her first pony Tommy, who was one of the last pit ponies in the UK.

Overall sheep champion was won by S. Buckle, of Bleathgill, Kirkby Stephen, while JE Bellas and Son of Croft Ends Farm, Appleby, received the silverware for overall cattle champion.
