A DENT pub has won a prestigious award for the quality and range of its cider and perry.

The George and Dragon, which has six traditional British ciders available at all times, has won the award for the Best Cider Pub for the North West in the Great British Pub Awards 2014.

No pubs in Scotland or Yorkshire were in the competition, so technically the George and Dragon is the best cider and perry pub above Birmingham.

It was voted for by a national selection committee from The Publican’s Morning Advertiser.

It is the pub’s 14th award in the past 18 months having already scooped several from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

Pub manager Gary Kirby started to get involved with cider because he is diabetic and the traditional apple-based drink contains less sugar than real ale.

He said: “We’ve had more than 400 ciders on in four years which shows people are enjoying traditional, still, cloudy and British ciders. We only stock British produce.

“To be awarded it from the Morning Advertiser means my peers have chosen to give me the award which means a huge amount to me.”

Gary is preparing to showcase some of the award-winning cider and perry at the pub’s British Cider and Perry festival which starts on Saturday, August 23, and finishes on Monday, August 25.
