THOUSANDS turned out today for one of the sunniest Grasmere sports days in recent times, which saw 189 runners take part in the main event - the iconic Senior Guides race.

This was won by the first-time Grasmere entrant Nick Swinburn in an extremely fast time just outside the course record of 12mins 21secs, which has remained unbeaten since 1978.

Swinburn, a renowned runner from Northumberland, beat nine-times Grasmere senior race winner Rob Jebb, who runs for Bingley Harriers, into a very close second place.

Rob Hope, a three-times winner, was third.

Grasmere Sports, one of the highlights of the Lake District summer calendar, showcased a range of sports events, including Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, track races, children's sprints and tug-of-war challenges.

For animal lovers, attractions included a lurcher display, hound trailing, birds of prey demonstration and pet dog show.
