Michelle Knott, corporate responsibility advisor, works closely with schools and colleges and is responsible for arranging work experience placements.

“Being part of a global organisation that produces the most unique, innovative and complex submarines is great for any CV,” she said.

Kelly Sankey, 19, from Barrow, applied for a work experience placement at BAE in 2011 before she started her A-Levels in Ulverston Victoria School.

After a fortnight in the business, Kelly was hooked and, after completing her A-Levels, she joined the company as a Project Management Trainee.

She said: “When I was in school, I didn’t understand what project management was or the variety of tasks and responsibilities it involves.

“It was during my work experience that I realised exactly what project management entailed and how important it is to BAE Systems. I knew then that it was something I wanted to get involved with.”
