THE early summer sun ensured there were top quality horticultural exhibits on display at the annual Greenodd Show on Saturday – but the recent wind and rain gave both gardeners and organisers the jitters.

In the end, secretary Mary Barnes was delighted to declare the event ‘an amazing show’.

“When the winds blew and the rain came down in bucketfuls the committee were a little concerned about how the show would be affected,” said Mrs Barnes.

“As it turned out we need not have worried since we ended up with some fabulous exhibits in every section, the only section which seemed to have been affected was the local flowers.

“The show was well supported both by the exhibitors who staged flowers and vegetables, that would not have disgraced themselves at national shows, and by the visitors who came to view the show. All the judges commented on just how difficult it had been to select the very best in each class.”

Mark Hewertson, of Egremont, showed off his gardening skills taking best in show with a superb giant cauliflower and runner-up with a vase of three beautiful gladioli.

In the junior section, best friends Evie McMullen and Sophie Rouse, who both attend the Penny Bridge Academy, shared the honours, each winning two trophies for their hard work.
