THE streets of Kendal are coming alive today and this weekend as thousands of people descend on Kendal for three days of outdoor theatre and entertainment.

Mintfest, which last year attracted around 25,000 revellers, is set to be even bigger this year, with the town’s parks and public spaces hosting artists, dancers, acrobats and other performers.

The three-day event will see more than 60 companies arrive from across the UK, Europe and beyond.

They will be performing 70 small scale shows, including 15 ‘strolling’ shows.

Highlights will include ‘Mintfest on the Streets’, when artistes will perform throughout the centre of town on Saturday, as well as circus, dance, theatre and walkabout performances in Abbot Hall Park on Sunday.

There will also be live music in the Brewery Gardens on Saturday evening and all day Sunday, as well as plenty for children.

But it isn’t all about visiting artists.

Friday and Saturday will see a team of local beatboxers take to the stage at the Brewery as part of a stand against climate change.

The youngsters will be pedalling an eight-bike generator to create the sound, thanks to help from arts organisations and the campaign group, South Lakes Action on Climate Change (SLACC).

‘Brakes and Beats’ has also been put together using costumes from charity shops, while the set is made from old bike wheels.

Chris, volunteer leader at SLACC, said: “It’s a real treat to know there are young people in Kendal who will give time and energy to make Kendal a great place to live.

“We want to help them be able to make their own fun in a way that works for the planet too.”
The performances will be held at 6pm or 7.45pm.

Throughout the weekend there will also be stalls selling delicious food and drink, to really get the party started.

Most of the festival is free. Booking for the ticketed shows is open through the Brewery Arts Centre Box Office on 01539-725133.
