WORK has started on an £82,000 project to remove overhead electricity lines from one of South Lakeland’s most stunning landscapes.
Electricity North West is removing six electricity poles and 540 metres of power lines which have been in place in the Stockdale valley for more than 60 years.
It is working with Friends of the Lake District and the Lake District National Park Authority to replace the lines with underground cables.
Mike Dugdale, programme delivery manager, said: “We understand how unsightly power lines can be and we’re delighted to be burying the lines in Stockdale.”
By placing the lines underground, the company is also providing the local area with a more reliable supply of electricity, as the new cables will not be susceptible to bad weather.
Over the past five years Electricity North West has invested £1.7million in removing 19 kilometres of overhead power lines across the Lake District.
