DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced that the Government is going to more than double the speed of building the Coastal Path, bringing completion of the project forward by ten years from 2030 to 2020.
The opening of the path will give walkers and nature lovers access to all 3,000 miles of the English coastline including Cumbria.
The announcement has been welcomed by The Ramblers, whose chief executive Benedict Southworth said, “Investing in the coast path is not just good news for walkers, but will help to breathe new life into our coastal towns and villages, boosting tourism and the local economy.”
The Open Spaces Society’s Kate Ashbrook said the Government was downplaying it with the term ‘coastal path’.
She said: “The access is much more than a path, giving people an opportunity to wander freely and enjoy the spectacular landscapes and views.”
