Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson said: “This can be a very exciting time for many young people, and I would encourage them to enjoy their first week at university.

“However, there are some key safety tips that they need to be aware of to ensure they stay safe while having fun.

“For many students Fresher’s Week involves a lot of alcohol, and I would urge them to drink responsibly – so that their night is one to remember, not one to forget.

“We’re not saying to students that they shouldn’t drink at all – but to be aware of the risks of getting too drunk. As well as health implications of too much alcohol, people need to be aware of the consequences of getting involved in assaults, disorder, and anti-social behaviour.

“Help to look after each other. Plan your night out together - where you are going and how you are getting home. This will help to ensure that everyone has a good night and gets home safely.”
