THE new headteacher of a Lake District primary school says he was drawn to the role because of its ‘strong community spirit and ethos’.

Peter Harrison has 22 years’ teaching experience and took over the headship at Windermere’s St Cuthbert’s Primary School this month.

Mr Harrison, who lives in Staveley, has worked across Yorkshire and Cumbria in secondary and primary schools but admits the opportunity at St Cuthbert’s was too big to turn down.

“I was drawn to the school because of the strong community spirit and ethos of this small Catholic primary school which has a dedicated team of staff and committed parents,” he said.

“The school has small class sizes which allows the staff to really get to know the children and their families.

“I believe in strong working family learning partnerships and these are key factors that have led to excellent results with standards above national expectations across all our age ranges.”

And with just a fortnight in the post Mr Harrison has already started stamping his mark on the school.

“Already several initiatives have been put in place including plans for a new multi-purpose playground supported by Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust; purchase of a suite of interactive tablets and the introduction of after-school provision as part of our 'wrap around' care,” he said.

“Over the holiday it was a pleasure to meet the head of Stonyhurst Catholic College to develop joint ventures for both of our schools and we have some exciting ideas planned for the future.”

He added: “My vision for the school is to ensure St Cuthbert's Primary School continues to develop its academic standards and promote new and exciting opportunities for every member of the school community.

“The distinctive ethos of the school is one that makes a real difference to the way our school lives.

“I am lucky to lead a very welcoming school that is inclusive to all religious denominations and I would welcome visits from anybody.”
