NETWORK Rail contractors are to carry out repair work to the Kirkby Stephen railway bridge this weekend.

Cumbria County Council has announced that the A685 will be closed to traffic on either side of the railway bridge from around 10am tomorrow until midnight on Sunday.

The road may reopen sooner on Sunday if the work is completed earlier.

There will be no access to the M6 from Kirkby Stephen and the diversion route is via the A66 westbound to Penrith then M6 south. There will be variable message signs at the A66, A685 junction, and three signs at various locations warning motorists of this.

Pedestrian access will be maintained either by escort under the bridge or by the railway foot bridge.
