PENRITH is all set to get a town council from May 2015, after Eden District councillors last night agreed the recommendations of a Community Governance Review.

The Community Governance Review included the results of a recent postal ballot, which showed that 65 per cent of people were in favour of establishing a town council in Penrith. Forty per cent of Penrith's eligible electorate took part in the ballot.

Eden District Council’s Leader, Coun Gordon Nicolson OBE, said: “Tonight’s decision confirms that the residents of Penrith will have a town council following the election of members from the local community in May 2015.

"In the meantime, the 11 Eden councillors for Penrith wards will have the important task of making the initial arrangements for setting up the new council.

"Eden District Council will support the Penrith members in their work. This is an historic change and I wish the new town council success in the future.”

The first election of councillors to the new Penrith Town Council will take place in May 2015, when the next general and local elections take place.
