KIRKBY Lonsdale Brass Band, one of the oldest in the United Kingdom, has appointed Gordon Clough as its new musical director.

Mr Clough, who took over the reins on Monday (Sep 8), is an accomplished trombone player. He has played with bands such as Haigh, Wingates, and Leyland and has also played with Kings of Brass.

He began his conducting career with the Darwen band, who progressed from fourth section to top section in six years. Then he had spells at Freckleton and Dallmelington, and has also won the first section finals with Longridge in Cardiff.

Retiring musical director Allan Greenwood will remain involved with the Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Academy which is being launched in September. He joined the band in December 1978 and has led the band to success not only in national and local competitions but also at numerous community events.

The band’s business manager, Ken Talbot, said “Allan will be a difficult act to follow and the band members are all very grateful for his hard work and commitment over the years”.
