THE trust that runs Morecambe Bay's hospitals is to get extra support as it battles its way out of 'special measures'.

Former NHS chief executive, Fiona Wise, has been drafted in by watchdog, Monitor, to help the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Trust (UHMBT) improve the care it provides.

It comes just three months after the trust was put into special measures by Monitor, following a series of inspections as its main sites in Kendal, Furness and Lancaster.

“This extra support will help the trust to make the improvements that are needed to ensure better care for patients in Morecambe Bay," said Adam Cayley, regional director at Monitor.

“Fiona has a wealth of NHS experience, particularly in helping organisations to improve the way they provide services to patients. She will help the trust to build on the progress that it has already made.

“We will continue to look closely at the trust’s progress and will take further action if necessary.”

Ms Wise, a former chief executive with over 40 years’ NHS experience, has take on the role of 'improvement director' at the trust.

The trust - which runs Westmorland General Hospital, Furness General Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary - was put in special measures in June 2014 and a package of new regulatory measures aimed at improving care for patients was agreed.

Ms Wise will be employed by, and accountable to, Monitor, but will be based at the trust in a part-time capacity.

She will provide support and expertise, but also hold the trust to account.

She will take up the post on October 1.
