GREAT-grandmother Marjorie Pickles is baking again after cataract treatment restored her sight.
Marjorie, 81, of Grange-over-Sands, became frustrated when cataracts prevented her from enjoying the things she loves, such as spending time with her family, making cakes, watching her favourite soaps and reading magazines.
The expert cake baker - great-grandmother to Mia and Bobby - visited her GP, who suggested an eye clinic, but its waiting times prompted Marjorie to look elsewhere.
Her daughter Val suggested she try Care UK's Rochdale Ophthalmology Service, which provides free NHS treatment, after hearing a radio advert highlighting waiting times of just a few weeks.
Marjorie booked into the clinic for the next available appointment, and was able to return home on the same day as her treatment.
"The hour-and-a-half travel was worth every penny of petrol," said Val, whose mother also has macular degeneration and arthritis.
“When they told us she had cataracts it made her life miserable. She couldn’t read or watch the TV. I couldn’t recommend Care UK enough. It was all over from the initial consultation to the operation within a matter of weeks. Being able to have the treatment so fast made a big difference to the quality of both mine and my mum’s lives.”
Marjorie is now back to normal life again, driving her car, reading and baking treats for her great-grandchildren.
