BINS for composting food waste are being offered at a cut price to South Lakeland householders.
A team from the joint Cumbria County Council and South Lakeland District Council initiative were out in force in Kendal to encourage people to make use of their food waste.
Unlike compost bins, the ‘digesters’ are capable of taking all kinds of food waste including cooked and uncooked meat, fish and dairy products.
“It was great to get out and meet people and help explain about the benefits these food waste digesters bring and what great value they are,” said Cumbria County Council Deputy Leader Clare Feeney-Johnson.
The team spoke to around 50 enthusiasts keen to compost using the green cones which are available to people in South Lakeland at £15, reduced from the £79.50 recommended retail price.
There are just under 800 of the digesters available in South Lakleland.
The units could result in 200 tonnes of food waste being removed each year.
