A CUMBRIA Police investigation into allegations of child sex and physical abuse, which was shelved in the mid-1990s, is to be reviewed 'immediately'.

Complaints were made nearly 20 years ago by former pupils of Underley Hall School at Kirkby Lonsdale who have recently questioned why the case was closed and no prosecutions followed.

After recent representations from former pupils, a Detective Chief Inspector of Cumbria Police is now going to be appointed to lead the internal review.

It will focus on the 'standard' of the investigation which took place over 1996-97 and whether there were any police 'misconduct' issues, said a statement.

The complaints have recently been brought to the attention of the recently-appointed Chief Constable of Cumbria Police, Jerry Graham.

It is expected that the review will take at least a month to complete and the Independent Police Complaints Commission has also been informed, said Cumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Richard Rhodes.
