CUMBRIA is backing the Stoptober campaign to help the county's smokers give up the habit.
The average smoker has 13 cigarettes a day and could save £1,696 if they were smoke-free for a year, says Cumbria County Council - enough to fill a family car with petrol 28 times or buy the weekly food shop for six months.
More than 1,400 Cumbrians gave up smoking thanks to last year's Stoptober campaign, says the council.
Coun Ian Stewart, the cabinet member for public health, said: “Smoking is one of the biggest causes of premature death in Cumbria each year, and I’d urge smokers across the county to take part in Stoptober and achieve something special.”
