SOUTH Lakes Red Squirrel Group (SLRSG) has been awarded more than £4,000 to help conserve the creatures in the Lake District.
The project stretches from the urban and suburban districts of Barrow, Dalton, Ulverston and Millom to the more rural valleys such as Duddon and Broughton-in-Furness.
This money was set aside by the Red Squirrel Survival Trust (RSST) after a campaign was set up in memory of Sarah McClay, who died after being mauled by a tiger at the South Lakes Safari Zoo, Dalton-in-Furness.
Jackie Foott (SLRSG coordinator) also added “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed to Sarah's Fund as the money will be spent on wildlife-monitoring cameras, new leaflets, posters, feeder boxes, squirrel feed and bait, traps, new display boards and additional merchandise to raise more funds.”
