AN action group campaigning to upgrade the A595 at Kirkby-in-Furness has pleaded with county councillors to fix what it calls ‘the worst pinch point in the country’.

Addressing the council’s Local Committee for South Lakeland, campaigner Robin Cornah said the road ‘causes traffic chaos on a daily basis’.

“Children are being put at risk from speeding traffic and the school crossing is an accident waiting to happen,” he said.

“At no point is there a standard two lane carriageway width of 7.3 metres and at ten points the total carriageway width is less than a single standard lane of 3.65 metres.”

Mr Cornah also said that police data recorded inside a 30mph zone outside Burlington Church of England Primary School between October 7 and November 4, 2013, showed 80 per cent of traffic speeding.

He called on councillors to undertake a desk top study of options for the bypass and use its ongoing highways budget to install speed control, a safe crossing and new bus shelter.

A response from the highways team said: “We are fully aware of the issues caused for residents and highway users on this road. However, budgetary pressures require major schemes to be prioritised.

“A proposed new bus stop was dismissed at a recent site meeting but an alternative location been proposed.

“Traffic calming measures are being developed.”
