ROADWORKS on a busy Kendal road have been extended past the second expected finishing date beca.

The United Utilities project to replace two large sewer pipes under Appleby Road between Fowling Lane and Vine Street were due to finish earlier this month after an extension from early September. But work is now expected to finish around October 26.

"It looks like our work in Appleby Road is going to extend past our last estimate of “early part of October”," said Polly Rourke, of United Utilities. "Ground conditions have been really bad, with a lot of unexpected and hard-to-dig concrete, plus an electricity cable needed to be diverted.

"However we will be away for the start of half term on October 26."

The long-delayed roadworks have already been met with concern from frustrated business owners in and around Kendal Business Park as the work was originally supposed to end before the start of the school year.

It was reported at the end of August that businesses had suffered a 60 per cent drop in footfall due to the disruption.

"We’re hoping to finish sooner, if we can," added Ms Rourke.

Once the project is complete, it expected that Cumbria County Council will return and resurface the full width of the road from Fowling Lane to the Sandylands Lane junction later in the year.
