THE Westmorland branch of the Campaign for Real Ale welcomed around 1,000 enthusiasts to its annual Beer and Cider Festival in Kendal Town Hall.

In the festival's 21st year, 15 ciders and perries and 55 beers were on sale compared to nine in 1993.

Scooping the festival's annual title of Best of Westmorland was Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery with its Jubilee Stout.

Head brewer Stuart Taylor said: "It is a superb accolade to win Best of Westmorland as it is judged alongside beers from the other great local breweries in Westmorland.

"Jubilee is a powerful stout at 5.5 per cent ABV, brewed with a carefully balanced selection of chocolate and black malt along with a hint of roasted barley."

Two CAMRA members - bar manager Ivor Chittenden and Tony Jackson - were honoured with special tankards for their work since the event was founded.

Bowness Bay Brewing also launched this year's Festival Ale - a golden bitter with fruit and spice aromas - which had been brewed for Friends of the Lake District's 80th birthday.
