HUNDREDS of artists have been involved in transforming shop windows across Kendal into a colourful display of cartoons ahead of this weekend's Lakes International Comic Art Festival.

A range of people have been involved in their creation - from professionals to primary school children.

Julie Tait, director of Kendal Arts International, said more than 40 windows have been given a makeover and added the festival has 'captured the imagination' of the town.

"The town has taken comic art to its heart and has definitely got into the spirit of the event," said Julie.

"People are flying in for events from Italy and Sweden and even further afield so I am expecting hundreds of international visitors as well as thousands from across the UK.

"Comics can cover the whole spectrum and there are so many different types from Beano and Viz to the graphic novels that can tackle more serious subjects. Reading can be difficult for some people but when you put words and pictures together it really can help to encourage people to read."

Events begin across the town on Friday and run until Sunday.
