THE ‘Yellow Earl’, Hugh Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale was remembered by a North Westmorland resident long after his death in 1944. ‘It was a fine sight to see the Earl drive through the village in his carriage and four. The carriages were canary yellow and black wheels, with the Earl’s coronet on the doors. The beautiful chestnut horses were ridden by postilions in yellow jackets, black caps and boots, carrying silver mounted whips. Locally they were called “tigers”. Lord Lonsdale in a grey suit or tweeds, went every morning to his greenhouses to collect the button hole he always wore. When he attended local shows or sheep dog trials, he and his guests would arrive in a fleet of yellow landaus. His tall athletic figure on a shepherd’s crook was a familiar part of any Westmorland gathering. He was, himself, one of the finest horsemen in the country and his string of race horses was trained at Clifton. When the Kaiser visited Lowther castle the special train stopped at Lowther and Clifton station to be met by all the pomp and glory of “lordy”’.
