EXTRA patrols and random speed checks are to take place on alternative roads which drivers are using to avoid heavy congestion on the A590.

On Monday the Highways Agency began a six-week long £272,000 project to repair foundations on a stretch of the A590 at Lindal-in-Furness.

The work has this week been causing tailbacks in both directions with some drivers choosing to divert around the congestion by travelling through Great Urswick.

Today Cumbria Police said they have received numerous complaints about speeding vehicles near to Low Furness School in the village and as a result will monitor the area closely.

"Delays are to be expected whilst the road works continue at Lindal-in-Furness; especially during the peak periods in a morning and evening on week days," said PCSO Helen Madden.

"Please allow extra time for your journey and be patient. Please can drivers taking the alternative route through the villages show extreme caution and adhere to the speed limit at all times.

"Cumbria Police have received numerous complaints about speeding vehicles especially in the area near to Low Furness school, Great Urswick. Extra patrols, random speed checks and radar work is being carried out in the area to address this."
