A SOUTH Lakeland charity has been honoured with an award recognising “outstanding achievement or endeavour in increasing human well-being and goodwill through outdoor activities.”

The Bendrigg Trust, between Killington and Old Hutton, was presented with the John Hunt trophy from the Countrywide Holidays Association.

The charity - an ‘adventure centre’ for disabled and disadvantaged people - was set up in 1957 with the aim of helping people with disabilities to access and enjoy the outdoors.

Centre principal Trevor Clarke said: “We’re very flattered and honoured to have been given this award, particularly since there are some very prestigious names on it.”

The award was established in 1969 and previous recipients include the Calvert Trust and Belfast and Dublin CHA Clubs.
