A QUICK-thinking landscaper sprung into action when a car was left teetering on its side on a wall when it left the road near New Hutton on Monday.

David Bainbridge, of Vicars Fields, Kendal, was travelling back to the town after collecting stone from Roan Edge Quarry when he came across a silver Toyota Yaris which had rolled down a small embankment on Hawkrigg Lane at around 11.15am.

He used straps he had in his van to hold the car - stopping it from toppling over with the trapped driver still inside - while the emergency services raced to the scene.

"I pulled my van across the road and secured the car from going over the wall," said Mr Bainbridge, owner of Greenacre Landscapes.

"If he tried to climb out it would have tilted over with him still inside. He is very lucky."

The 27-year-old driver, who police said was from Silsden in West Yorkshire, escaped unhurt after being cut free by firefighters.

The road was closed for around an hour-and-a-half.
