KENDAL’S own Woman’s Hour have been nominated for Best Breakthrough Act at this year’s UK Festival Awards.

The band, who released their debut album this year, had a busy summer of festival appearances including Latitude, Green Man, The Great Escape and a homecoming performance at Kendal Calling.

“We’d never played festivals before this year,” said frontwoman Fiona Burgess, “so it’s really exciting to be nominated.

“It’s nice to be recognised as a new artist – festivals are often seen as not being your own show, but we’ve tried to give people a flavour of what they get if they come to our headline shows.

“We also used them to try out using a drummer, which has given us a new energy live.”

Woman’s Hour are now on the second leg of their UK and European tour, but recently booked a rehearsal space in Old Hutton to work on material for their second album.

Cumbrian event Kendal Calling also picked up four nominations for the awards, including best medium sized festival, best family festival, best toilets and best headline performance by Suede.

The winners will be announced on December 1 - to vote go to http://www.festivalawards.com/.
