Two women were being quizzed last night as a murder probe continued into the death of a 48-year-old man in Shipley.

The body of the man, named locally as Paul Brannan, was found in Rochester Street, Windhill, shortly after 6.30pm on Sunday.

The two women, aged 24 and 30, were arrested on suspicion of murder a short time later.

A police officer stood guard yesterday outside a flat in Rochester Street. Yellow police tape marked off the area as forensic teams carried out their investigations.

People living in the surrounding area said they had been shocked by the events.

Tracey Flynn, 38, of Festival Avenue, Windhill, said she was friends with Mr Brannan, a single man, and had seen him the night before he died. She said: "We were the last to see him alive.

"We went to his house on Saturday at about 11.15am and left about 12.30pm.

"There was another man staying with him who told us he (Mr Brannan) had been hit over the head with a bottle of spirits. When I saw him he was staring at me.

"He did not look well. It is really sad what has happened to him."

Geoffrey Whitaker, 44, of Crag Road, Windhill, said: "When I saw him he was not really with it.

"There were lots of comings and his flat was always full of scallies but character-wise he was right on. He was a nice guy."

A post-mortem examination was due to be carried out last night to establish the cause of Mr Brannan's death.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to call Keighley Police on (01535) 617059.
