FLOODING in a Furness town is on the agenda at a meeting on Monday.

The Flood Forum will meet in Dalton Drill Hall, in Nelson Street, from 6pm on Monday.

Residents can hear how Cumbria County Council has been working with the Environment Agency, Barrow Borough Council and United Utilities to reduce the flood risk to properties in the future following flooding in 2012.

Cumbria County Council’s work to reduce flood risk in the town has already included a number of sewer and drainage improvements and diverting gullies carrying surface water.

Representatives from the county council and other agencies will be attending the meeting next Monday to talk about these improvements and further work required to reduce flood risk from Poaka Beck. There will be an opportunity for residents to comment on any changes and future flood defence measures.

The county council led a multi-agency investigation into the causes of the 2012 floods and a report setting out the findings will also be presented at the meeting.

Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member responsible for flood protection, said: “We experienced the second wettest year on record in 2012, when a number of properties in Dalton were flooded.

"A lot of work has been done since then to reduce the flood risk to the town and more improvements are planned. I would encourage people in Dalton to attend Monday’s meeting so they can hear about this work and give us their views on future improvements.”

Louis Antoine, from the Environment Agency, said: “We would urge the local community to come along to the forum at Drill Hall on Monday 27 October so they can have their say on the future of flood risk management in Dalton.

“By working closely with the community we can make sure we tap into their local knowledge and ensure we find the best solution for local people.”
