STORIES of World War One soldiers from Beetham, Burton and Holme were told to around 400 people at the weekend.

The Holme and District Local History Society staged the exhibition in the Burton-in-Kendal Memorial Hall thanks to a £4,900 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Entitled The Great War - Our Village Soldiers - Burton, Holme and Beetham, it was opened by Peter Donnelly, Curator of the Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment Museum, who was in WW1 uniform complete with Lee Enfield Rifle.

Pupils from Holme Community School made posters and wrote poems and letters inspired by the War Horse story and youngsters from Burton Morewood School wrote letters to the unknown soldier and made a Field of Poppies. Other displays were made by the Burton Arts and Craft society, the Women's Institute and Burton Guides.

A video presentation created by Geoff Pegg showed photographs of some of the soldiers, images of the war, including poems and music and a roll call.

The exhibition will be next shown in Holme Village Hall on November 23 between 10am to 4pm.
