THE SPECTACULAR TALE OF PETER RABBIT by Emma Thompson, £12.99

OSCAR-winning actress Emma Thompson continues to follow in her late father's footsteps with her children's writing.

Those of a certain generation will no doubt remember that Eric Thompson was the writer and narrator of the English version of the popular French animation Le Manège Enchanté - better known in English as The Magic Roundabout - which was broadcast by the BBC between 1965 and 1977.

Miss Thompson is also proving adept at adaptation with her delightful books about Peter Rabbit.

This is the third in the series, following on from The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Christmas Tale of Peter Rabbit.

Perhaps it is not surprising that she chose to adapt Beatrix Potter's books, having had the Lake District writer's stories read to her as a child by her father "in his best Dougal voice".

In her latest Peter Rabbit story, Miss Thompson reveals the "rollercoaster" adventure Peter and little bunny Benjamin have with they sneak through a fence to visit a travelling fair.

It is superbly illustrated in faithful Beatrix Potter style by Eleanor Taylor and published by the original Potter publisher Federick Warne.

Wonderful!
