FOOTLOOSE Walking Club is celebrating 15 years of fell walks and friendship.

Sunday mornings see walkers from Ulverston, Kendal and further afield meeting up for walks at locations around the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales.

With boots, walking poles and weatherproof gear at the ready, the walks always have an experienced leader, but members are welcome to bring along their own maps and compasses. Sometimes two walks are offered of varying distance and difficulty, and walkers always gather for a drink and a chat afterwards.

Chairman Tony Mayo told the Citizen: "It's a very strong principle that after the walk we meet in a nice pub because you can always get teas, coffees and hot chocolate in a pub, but you can't get a pint in a tea shop. That's a very strong part of it, an hour chatting, which you don't always get on a walk because you can be strung out in single file and you don't always get to talk to everybody."

The club was originally founded by Linda Marshall as a singles walking club, following a meeting at the Stan Laurel Inn, but has been open to all for a number of years.

As well as fell walks, activities include theatre and cinema trips, meals out and walking holidays in locations such as Scotland, Italy, Switzerland and Morocco.

A number of club members are also closely involved in Ulverston Walking Festival and are working hard towards next year's event.

The club would love to welcome new members, especially younger walkers, and membership is only £5 per year.
