A CASH-STRAPPED mental health charity has taken its 'message in a bottle' survival campaign to the streets of South Lakeland.

South Lakeland Mind supporters spent last weekend in Kendal, Grange and Windermere to publicise the organisation's financial plight.

They hope their 'HELP Message in a Bottle' campaign will boost donations to the charity, which helps around 300 people a year who suffer from a range of mental health problems.

Among the people South Lakeland Mind helps ar5e those who have been referred by adult social care and GPs.

Chief officer Jonathan Ingram warned it could be forced to close because of the funding crisis.

"We need to build donations urgently," he said. "It could be a small amount, it could be a large amount: each to their means.

"But with a coalition of stakeholders – from individuals to trust funds to statutory bodies - who believe in what we do as a charity, and what we provide for the locality in terms of mental health provision, we believe we can survive."
