Britten’s War Requiem

Cumbria Choral Initiative Chorus and Orchestra, with Amabile Girls’ Choir, soloists and conductor Ian Jones, perform Britten’s War Requiem at Kendal Parish Church on Saturday.

The War Requiem is a moving and expressive statement about the futility of war. It interweaves the poems of Wilfred Owen with the Latin Requiem Mass for the Dead.

In the foreground, accompanied by a chamber ensemble, the tenor and bass soloists sing the Owen settings.

Soloists Nicholas Hurndall Smith and John Lofthouse are of an age when, in 1914, they would have been called to serve in France.

In the distance, ethereally detached, the voices of the Amabile Girls’ Choir accompanied by chamber organ, intone with purity and innocence further words from the Latin text.

India's Disappearing Railways

Prior to its run at London’s Royal Geographical Society, exhibition India’s Disappearing Railways will be at Rheged from November 8-20.

The vivid photographic exhibition by Australian photojournalist Angus McDonald captures this vast subcontinent’s unique narrow-gauge railways in all its colour, chaos and humanity.

An intimate and humorous portrait of life on the trains, the exhibition evokes the very soul of India from a unique standpoint and with a rare empathy, illustrates the lives of those who ride them, work on them, and live alongside them.
