LOVERS of dialect spoke out about their passion at an annual gathering at Rydall Hall.

National Dialect Weekend played host to linguistic enthusiasts fro all over England.

On the Friday evening a concert of dialects 'Oor Mak o' Tawk' was held in the Bishop Bulley Barn in the grounds of Rydal Hall.

Stand out performances came from President Ted Relph, who got things underway with a rendition of Mardale Hunt, and Vice president Len Hayton, Levens,  who gave a resume of the history of the local dialect and the peoples who influenced it. 

Chairman Bryan Dawson and Editor Louise Green performed a dialect version of Romeo and Juliet with Louise perched on a step-ladder

Saturday saw competitors battle it out for trophies.

The Sam Laycock Trophy for original writing in the dialect of the host area performed by the author was won by Ted Relph of Crosby Ravensworth.

The Bill o' Bowes Cup for original writing in any English dialect performed by the author was won by Johnny Handle of Hexham.
