MORE than 1,800 smokers in Cumbria stubbed out their cigarettes for Stoptober, the 28-day stop smoking challenge, according to Public Health England (PHE).
Twenty per cent more smokers in Cumbria took up the challenge compared to the 2013 campaign.
They joined 250,000 people around the country who gave up cigarettes during October.
PHE say those who took part are now five times more likely to remain smoke-free, contributing to the growing numbers of non-smokers in Cumbria.
