A KENDAL 'knit and natter' group has turned a £50 slice of good fortune into a £1,200 donation to the Poppy Appeal.

The group, which meets at the Rifleman’s Arms on Beast Banks, won the £50 after being named Club of the Month in a Knitting Magazine competition in July.

After raising more than £600 for the Poppy Appeal last year, the members decided to spend their winnings on red wool for more poppies "in the hope that there may be someone out there that would like to buy them".

Group member Wendy Higson said: "We started making them early in the year and by October a large box of poppies had been made in all different sizes and shades of red with shiny black buttons and brooch bars. "The poppies went on sale on October 18 in the Rifleman's Arms and it wasn’t long till the word spread and people were even sending stamped addressed envelopes asking for them, we just couldn’t keep up.

"What was originally a hope turned into an amazing success and we sold in excess of 300 poppies. We are so proud to have not only won a competition earlier in the year, but also to have turned our £50 winnings into a charity donation of £1,200 for the Royal British Legion on such a poignant year, the 100th Anniversary of World War 1."
