A TOTAL of 92 per cent of patients receiving cancer care at the Morecambe Bay hospital trust have rated their care as 'very good' or 'excellent'.

The results have come in as part of the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey (NCPES), which have put services 'on a par' with specialist cancer hospital, the Christie, for overall patient satisfaction.

"It was a higher score than our peers in the North West," said David Fyfe, lead clinician for cancer services for the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust.

“The trust scores suggest a good culture of care, with high marks for courtesy, compassion and dignity in the way clinicians work with patients.

“There is more to do, and our scores show we need to make some changes to our letters and improve access to cancer nurse specialists.

"But the latest survey demonstrates our continuing improvement, with higher scores than last year in a number of areas, particularly in the way staff inform patients about their type of cancer and the way it could affect their lives.”

The national survey has been carried out annually for four years, and all 153 acute trusts providing adult cancer care take part.

The report also said:

* The trust scored above national average on overall NHS care

* The scores showed an improvement in the number of patients who were given written information about the type of cancer they had

* The trust scored above the national average for the patient being given the name of the clinical specialist nurse in charge of their care

* The trust was above the national average for the number of patients reporting they were given information about support groups
