A VIOLENT assault in South Lakeland has left a woman with severe back injuries, say British Transport Police.

The authority is appealing for witnesses to the attack which happened just after 10pm on Saturday (November 15) where a woman was pushed down the steps leading to the subway from platform three at Ulverston railway station.

Investigating officer DC Gareth Gray said: “The woman sustained severe injuries in the assault - two fractured vertebrae in her back, and must now wear a back brace for two months.

“It is believed an altercation took place at the top of the steps just before the woman was pushed, around the time the 10.01pm train to Lancaster arrived at the station. I am appealing for any witnesses who may be able to provide information relating to this incident to come forward.”

Police said a 19-year-old man from the Barrow area was arrested at the scene for the alleged assault on the woman and allegedly assaulting two police officers, who has now been bailed.
